What this site weighs

“A light site” is an empty phrase for as long as no figure follows it. Here are ours, taken on 6 August 2026 across the 26 published pages, one by one. This page is written by the measurement itself: nobody copies a figure into it.

639 kB

The average weight of a page on a first visit, nothing in memory, files taken as they come.

228 kB

What those same files weigh once compressed, as they travel over the network.

15 files

The number of files a page asks for on average in order to display, 18 at most.

How it is measured

A program opens each page in a real browser, scrolls it to the bottom, and weighs everything that travelled. The method is deliberately unkind to us, because a flattering figure is of no use:

  • first visit, nothing already held in memory;
  • page read to the bottom, so everything that loads along the way counts;
  • uncompressed bytes for the headline figure, which is the worst case;
  • page by page: no overall average is allowed to hide the heaviest one.

Where the bytes go

Across all the pages measured:

  • 42 % - the code that makes the page work
  • 41 % - the styling
  • 13 % - the typefaces
  • 4 % - the text of the page

The text of a page weighs 27 kB on average: it is the smallest share of the weight. 10 files are the same on every page: from the second page on, the display no longer waits for them, they are served from the device and refreshed behind.

Page by page

From the heaviest to the lightest. No page is left off the list.

What we also check

Every page on a small screen

Every page is opened on a screen 360 points wide, the screen of an entry-level phone: none of them spills over sideways, neither at rest nor with the menu open.

No page left stranded

A page that no link reaches does not exist. The list of the site's pages is set against the list of its links: any page nothing reaches is flagged.

The internal links

Every link on the site is resolved down to the file it points at, anchors included, at every change to the site. A broken link stops publication.

These figures age. They are rewritten by the measurement itself, not copied out by hand: the page you are reading is produced from the survey of 6 August 2026.

A remark about these figures?

A measurement open to argument deserves the argument. Write to us: if the method can be improved, it will be corrected and the page will follow.
